The Qatari Ministry of Commerce and Industry has announced that industrial design applications are now being accepted, marking the implementation of Law No. 10 of 2020 on Industrial Designs and its Implementing Regulations No. 129 of 2024.

Under the new system, applicants may claim a six-month priority period and include up to 100 drawings in a single application, provided all designs belong to the same class. Applications will be examined within 30 days from filing, with a 90-day period to respond to office actions. The opposition period is 60 days from publication, and protection is granted for five years, renewable twice for a total of 15 years.

Filing requirements include a legalized power of attorney, identification for both applicant and designer, clear representations of the design, a class indication under the Locarno Classification, a description of intended use, and Arabic translations of any non-Arabic documents.

This development underscores Qatar’s commitment to strengthening its intellectual property system and aligning its design protection regime with international best practices.
