The Zanzibar Industrial Property Office (ZIPO), operating under the Zanzibar Business and Property Registration Agency (BPRA), has implemented significant increases in official fees for intellectual property services. The revised fees were published in the Zanzibar Government Gazette (Vol. CXXXIV No. 7369) on 18 July 2025, and will take effect on 11 August 2025.
The updated regulations introduce higher charges across a wide range of IP services, including trademarks, patents, industrial designs, and geographical indications. The increases range from 50% to 300%, depending on the service, and apply to both new and pending applications. Notably, the revised framework introduces new fee items, such as those related to the association of marks and hearings in opposition proceedings.
Applicants with pending matters are advised to settle outstanding official fees before the effective date, as the new rates will apply retroactively.
