The fourth annual Young AIPPI Members Summit, held on 9 to 10 July 2025, proved to be an insightful and engaging exploration of the rapidly evolving intellectual property landscape, all under the overarching theme of “NEW TECH, DATA, MEDIA & BUSINESS.” This year’s webinar format, featuring a global session and regionally focused satellite sessions, allowed for both broad perspectives and deep dives into critical IP issues.

Global Session Highlights: Charting the IP Frontier

The Global Session on July 9th, moderated by Julia Niedźwiecka, provided a comprehensive overview of cutting-edge IP topics. Expert speakers delivered compelling presentations and offered valuable insights. Aakriti Vadehra highlighted the unique challenges, existing gaps, and crucial steps forward in this vital area, emphasizing its growing importance in the global IP ecosystem. Büşra Bıçakcı, provided a clearer understanding of how to navigate the complexities of IP creation and protection in the dynamic world of digital advertising, where technological developments constantly reshape best practices. Finally, Thomas Baetens shed light on the latest legal hurdles faced in combating piracy across various platforms and introduced effective tools and strategies for intellectual property enforcement.

Global Session, featuring News in the SEP and Digital Advertising Sectors as well as on Combating IP Piracy

A standout feature following the Global Session was the highly engaging Soft Skills Session on “Public Speaking & Self Confidence” led by activation coach and trainer Eva Vercouteren. This interactive segment provided Young Members with practical strategies to enhance their public speaking abilities, boost self-confidence, and effectively navigate professional networking environments, both with emotional well-being and psychological safety in mind. One iconic example among all: “Stop being; Start doing!”

Satellite Sessions: Regional Insights and Expertise

The Summit continued on July 10th with three Satellite Sessions, each offering tailored discussions on topics of regional and global importance.

Asia Pacific & Middle East Session: Cross-Border IP Strategies in the Digital Age

Moderated by Chihiro Iijima Wein, this session provided an illuminating exploration of key IP developments in the region. First, Domingos Ng elucidated China-Macau’s pivotal role in fostering IP cooperation among China and Portuguese-speaking nations. This connection is historical because China-Macau was a Portuguese colony until 1999. Then, Manika Arora delved into the complex challenges of securing patent protection for groundbreaking, disruptive innovations, followed by Isha Sharma who shared extensive insights into the strategic blend of IP valuation, support for startups, and effective commercialization strategies.

EMEA Session: Navigating IP in a Connected World

Moderated by Louisa Galbraith, the EMEA session offered valuable perspectives on diverse IP topics. The first speaker was Vanessa Halle, who provided a detailed overview of IP protection mechanisms within the OAPI framework, highlighting key considerations for practitioners in the region. Then, Pierre Trusson delivered a comprehensive legal analysis of web scraping, addressing its implications for data ownership and intellectual property rights. Finally, Tilmann Künzl offered an in-depth look at the standards for litigation based on deposited material before the Unified Patent Court, drawing on insights from recent landmark decisions.

Americas Session: IP Strategies for Emerging Economies and Digital Innovation

Moderated by Blanca Mejía, the Americas session covered a broad spectrum of critical IP issues. Under the heading of New Green Tech in Latam, Luis Marquez discussed the burgeoning landscape of green technologies in Latin America and the associated IP considerations. Then, Idalla Brum explored another legal frontier, particularly in the new digital economy by diving into the evolving legal framework for trademark enforcement and brand protection within Brazil’s dynamic online betting market. This was followed by Ahmed Elmallah, shared valuable insights into the effective IP strategies for safeguarding financial innovations within Canada’s rapidly expanding FinTech sector, and José Antonio Fabara Jarrín, who delved into the complex and increasingly important area of data ownership and IP strategies in the realm of sports analytics.
