AIPPI Paraguay Hosts Regional Roundtable on the Impact of the EU–MERCOSUR Agreement on Intellectual Property

On 30 May 2026, the Paraguayan Group of AIPPI organized a regional roundtable entitled “Impact of the EU–MERCOSUR Agreement on Intellectual Property” in Asunción, Paraguay, as part of the activities preceding the ASIPI Mid-Year Meeting.

The event brought together distinguished speakers from Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay to discuss the implications of the EU–MERCOSUR Agreement for intellectual property protection and legislative harmonization within the region. Participants exchanged views on the current status of the agreement, the asymmetries between the two blocs, and the challenges that its implementation may pose for national IP systems.

Particular attention was devoted to Geographical Indications, highlighting their role not only as intellectual property rights but also as strategic public policy tools capable of fostering local development and enhancing the value of regional products.

The panel featured Peter Siemsen (Brazil), Gastón Richelet (Argentina), Gustavo Fischer (Uruguay) and Wilfrido Fernández (Paraguay), with an introductory presentation by Ambassador Ricardo Caballero Aquino. The discussion was moderated by Aldo Fabrizio Módica Bareiro.

The event provided a valuable platform for regional dialogue and concluded with a call for greater awareness among public authorities, practitioners and civil society regarding the importance and potential impact of the EU–MERCOSUR Agreement on the future development of intellectual property in South America.
