AI in Patenting Operations – Global Insights and UAE Perspectives

The AIPPI-UAE Patent Group launched a series of thematic webinars aimed at deepening discussions around key trends shaping the intellectual property landscape. The first of these was a webinar that focused on the growing impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on patent practices in both public sector and private practice, with particular attention to developments within the UAE’s IP ecosystem. This event marked the beginning of a structured dialogue intended to explore the implications of AI for patent professionals, innovators, policymakers, and institutions engaged in shaping the future of IP in the region.

The webinar was formally opened by Ms. Hoda Barakat, President of AIPPI – UAE, followed by a welcome short speech given by H.E Dr. Abdelrahman Almuaini, the Assistant Undersecretary of Intellectual Property Sector at the UAE. Strengthening the UAE innovation framework through advanced policy, institutional collaboration, and emerging technologies such as AI, was clearly emphasized at the opening remarks for this webinar.

  • Johanna Guidet, European Patent Office, Administrator for Patent Law & Procedures, Guidance on Procedures, covering how AI is changing the world of patent examination at the European Patent Office.
  • Bruno Pouliquen, World Intellectual Property Organization, IP Data Machine Learning Development Manager, Head of ATAC (Advanced Technology Applications Center) & Alex Riechel, World Intellectual Property Organization, Head of the TISC (Technology and Innovation Support Centers) Development Section, covering on How AI is being used in WIPO and how WIPO is providing new perspectives on AI.
  • Bong Hoon Lee, the UAE Ministry of Economy, IP Sector, UAE Patent Office, Supervising Examiner, covering perspectives from the UAE Patent Office

A Q&A panel discussion followed, moderated by Mr. Leo Giannotti, an executive board member of the AIPPI UAE Group and one of the key founders of the UAE Patent Group, was also valued before the event was concluded with closing message by Mrs. Hoda Barakat.
